COVID-19 & Water

As the world continues to grapple with the COVID-19 pandemic, questions about the virus’s potential transmission and/or persistence in drinking water and wastewater are being asked.

Based on interim guidance issued by the World Health Organization on March 19, 2020, there is currently no evidence about the survival of the COVID-19 virus in drinking water or sewage. It goes on to say that the virus has not been detected in drinking water supplies, and based on current evidence, the risk to water supplies is low.

This interim guidance also states that while there is no evidence to date about survival of the COVID-19 virus in water or sewage, the virus is likely to become inactivated significantly faster than non-enveloped human enteric viruses with known waterborne transmission – such as adenoviruses, norovirus, rotavirus and hepatitis A. It also points out that other human coronaviruses have been shown to be sensitive to chlorination and disinfection with ultraviolet (UV) light.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Occupational Safety and Health Administration have also issued similar guidance. It can be found using the links below:

The National Association of Water Companies, the American Water Works Association and the Association of Metropolitan Water Agencies have also issued a joint statement reassuring the public about the safety of tap water.

UV disinfection and advanced oxidation systems safeguard water against bacteria, protozoa, viruses and chemical contaminants. Every day, our UV systems treat billions of gallons of water and wastewater around the world in municipal, industrial, and residential applications.

UV Water Treatment Product Development & Commercialization

At WEFTEC 2019 in Chicago, Trojan Technologies President, Stephen Bell, took Water Online Editor, Kevin Westerling, on a tour of our booth. During the tour, Stephen discussed the importance of strategic research and development and also explained why the TrojanUVFlex™ is garnering significant interest from municipalities around the world.

The TrojanUVFlex is ideal for non-potable reuse and other applications with low water quality, as well as 4-log virus applications in drinking water. Built on the proven Solo Lamp Technology platform, it provides municipalities with the most energy-efficient delivery of high UV doses in an extremely compact footprint.

Trojan Organizational Announcement

Earlier this week, Trojan Technologies President Marv DeVries shared the news with Trojan Associates that he will be retiring from Trojan this Spring. He looks forward to spending more time with his wife Peggy, their children and grandchildren, and being engaged in a variety of non-profit activities.

Marv joined Trojan 30 years ago in 1988. He has held progressively senior leadership roles in the Company and was appointed President in 2003, a position he has held for nearly fifteen years. With a background in engineering, Marv’s strategic vision, industry expertise and skilled leadership have contributed immeasurably to Trojan’s growth and success.

Trojan Technologies Well Positioned to Continue Path of Growth

DeVries states:

“We live in a world of growing water stress and water scarcity, and the solutions that Trojan offers in response are sought after for their reliability, their efficiency and for the trusted support that we provide.

Collectively, the Trojan team represents one of the greatest concentrations of expertise in the global water industry. The businesses have collectively never been stronger, and are very well-positioned to continue on a path of growth. As such, I believe that this is the right time to step down as President.”

When Marv joined Trojan 30 years ago, the company was comprised of one business unit, and revenues were $5 million.

The company has since grown to:

  • Displacement of over 285 railroad tanker cars of liquid chlorine (a train > 5 km long), every day.
  • The reduction total carbon emissions by the equivalent of emissions from ~ 800,000 cars & trucks, in 2017 alone.

Trojan ‘Goes Purple’ to Shine the Light on Woman Abuse

Since 2007, the London Abused Women’s Centre (LAWC) has been running the highly successful “Shine the Light on Woman Abuse” campaign.

During the month of November, homes, neighborhoods, businesses, cities, and counties are encouraged to ‘go purple’ to raise awareness of violence against women. The campaign was designed to support abused women in understanding that any shame and/or blame felt, does not belong to them but to the perpetrators of their abuse; and to raise the profile of the community agencies that can provide abused women with help as they attempt to live their lives free from violence and abuse.

Continuing to Shine the Light

2017 marks Trojan’s 6th year supporting the campaign and to help raise awareness, Trojan sported purple lights in the cafeteria throughout the month. On December 15th (Wear Purple Day), many associates wore purple and beautiful merchandise was sold in the cafeteria.

Trojan raised over $700 through personal donations and the sale of scarves, socks, pins, and keychains – the proceeds of which was all donated to the London Abused Women’s Centre.

Let’s all continue to ‘Shine the Light’, and work to end abuse against women.
