Organic contamination of pure power plant waters can cause a number of costly problems: it can foul ion-exchange resins in make-up and condensate deionizers, requiring more frequent resin cleaning and replacement.

TOC contamination found in the water will become corrosive acids at higher pressures, which can reduce the life of boilers, reactors and turbine blades. High-purity water is necessary for continuous operation of power facilities.

Forsmark Nuclear Power Plant Case Study

The Forsmark nuclear power plant, in Sweden, is located about 120 km outside of Stockholm. This facility generates 20-25 billion kilowatt hours of elecricity per annum from three, on site, boiling water reactors. This is a requirement to maintain a TOC level in the reservoir water which is < 100 ppb in order to prevent the formation of acids which lead to potential corrosion issues in the steam turbines.
