Treating Other Environmental Contaminants

TrojanUV systems can treat a range of contaminants in surface and groundwater, including NDMA, pharmaceuticals and fuel

About Environmental Contaminants

Environmental contaminants are harmful chemicals present in soil, air and water. Research has shown that a wide variety of such chemicals exist at trace concentrations in streams, lakes, rivers and groundwater throughout the world. UV advanced oxidation (also known as UV AOP) is an established technology for the remediation of contaminants in groundwater and surface water.

TrojanUV advanced oxidation systems have been installed around the world to treat a variety of contaminants, including:

  • Volatile organic compounds (e.g., 1,4-dioxane)

  • Algal toxins and taste & odor causing compounds

  • Pesticides

  • Nitrosamines (e.g., NDMA)

  • Endocrine disruptor compounds such as pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs)

  • Fuel and fuel additives

  • Hazardous substances (e.g., cyanide)

NDMA and Nitrosamines

The nitrosamine group, a group that includes N‑nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), has attracted increased attention from the water treatment community as potent and potentially wide-ranging water contaminants. While their presence in municipal wastewater and indirect potable reuse is relatively well understood, understanding of their presence in drinking water is limited.

Endocrine Disruptor Compounds

Research has provided growing evidence that many chemicals and mixtures of chemicals potentially present in our environment may act to inhibit, mimic, or accelerate the functions of the endocrine system in humans and animals. The sources of these contaminants are varied: wastewater treatment plant discharge, manufacturing plant wastewater, and chemical spills are a few examples.

Fuel and Fuel Additives

The accidental release of fuels and propellants has led to the widespread contamination of groundwater by chemicals such as methyl tertiary-butyl ether (MTBE), benzene, toluene, ethylene, xylene (BTEX) and hydrazine. Contamination of water supplies is wide ranging due to the large number of leaking underground storage tanks and pipes, gasoline spills, and gasoline-consuming recreational vehicle usage in reservoirs.
